Edgar Allan Poe s Stories And Poems - 1231 Words

Edgar Allan Poe once said, â€Å"Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.† A difficult childhood and the many deaths he experienced are reflected in Poe’s stories and poems. Edgar Allan Poe, a gothic horror author, led a controversial life which eventually led to his mysterious death. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts to David and Elizabeth Poe. Edgar had an older brother, named William, who was two years younger than Edgar and was cared for by his grandparents because of financial difficulties (Loveday). All of his family, including himself, moved to New York. When they lived there his father left them and moved to Virginia. In December 1810, Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, and by the following winter her physical condition weakened significantly and she passed away December 8, 1811 (Loveday). Orphaned, Poe was sent to live with John Allan and his wife. Poe went to a local school until he was six and then moved to England with the Allan family. After five years, they moved back to Virginia. Poe made an abundant amount of friends and excelled in his classes (Loveday). Poe eventually found out his foster father was unfaithful, he then confronted him, which began a decade long feud between the two (Loveday). Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia, but dropped out only a year later because his foster father wouldn t pay for his gambling debts.
